How we build decks
The visible part gets the attention. The hidden part does the work.
Footings have to be right. Posts need to be set and supported properly. Beams need to carry the load. Joists need the correct spacing. Hangers, fasteners, blocking, flashing, and ledger attachment all need to make sense for the structure.
This is where bad deck work usually hides. A deck can have nice boards and still be wrong underneath.
